Informatica World 2019 Recap: Improving Data for Better AI

By The IT Automation Editorial Staff on Thu, Jun 06, 2019 @ 08:06 AM

The biggest news from this year’s Informatica World, explained by the speakers who were there.

Artificial intelligence is popping up everywhere, from factory floors to hospital rooms to IT departments and more. The use cases are varied, the circumstances are diverse, but every AI tool has one thing in common: a need for data.

There’s plenty of data. Years ago, organizations began building data lakes, waiting for new technologies and tools that would help turn that data into binary gold. Those tools are now here, driven by AI and machine learning (ML), and there’s one big problem: Much of the data is insufficient.

What is Intelligent Automation?

By Brian McHugh on Tue, Jan 15, 2019 @ 08:01 AM

Intelligent Automation Defined

Intelligent automation is an IT automation tool that utilizes machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI).

ML relies on algorithms to predict outcomes based on data. The algorithms identify trends, commonalities, and correlations between variables, using statistical analysis to predict outcomes and future events. Then, as the program continues to run, the algorithms further improve their predictions based on subsequent datasets.

Any program, application, or system that can autonomously make decisions and take actions based on ML, has AI.

Intelligent automation refers to any IT automation tool that can improve its own processes and outcomes, optimize IT resources, and improve efficiency by analyzing data and augmenting human decision-making.

Gartner's IT Automation Predictions for 2019

By Brian McHugh on Wed, Jan 02, 2019 @ 10:01 AM

Towards the end of each year, Gartner releases its predictions for the upcoming year. These predictions start a lot of conversations, get lots of coverage in the tech press, and are always useful.

There’s also a lot of them. Besides Garter’s two Top 10 Trends lists (Strategic Technology and I&O), Gartner has recently released dozens of its “Predicts 2019” papers. To help prepare for the new year, we've scoured Gartner’s trend and predictions, explaining eight of their 2019 automation expectations below.

A few major themes stick out:

  • AI is being used to optimize IT Automation
  • IT Automation is being used to optimize Big Data
  • As processes are simplified, Big Data will become accessible to the broader workforce
  • The role of IT is changing

Overall, 2019 looks to be a busy year for IT Automation, AI, and Big Data.

Microsoft Ignite: Edge Computing and IoT to be a Revolution

By Brian McHugh on Tue, Oct 02, 2018 @ 08:10 AM

Microsoft held its annual Ignite conference last week, drawing over 30,000 developers and IT professionals to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Key Points

  1. Microsoft is focused on establishing a future for AI by ensuring that edge connectivity and cloud computing are secure and widely available.
  2. The three themes of Microsoft Ignite 2018 were Security, AI & Big Data, and IoT & Edge Computing.
  3. Microsoft is partnering with SAP and Adobe to deliver the Open Data Initiative.

While Microsoft had a list of exciting product announcements, speeches, and sessions throughout the week (ICYMI, they’re available online), the keynote address given by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and the context his keynote added to the conference, is getting much of the post-conference attention.

The Best IT Automation Tools for IT Agility

By Caroline Boyland on Thu, Feb 22, 2018 @ 13:02 PM

IT Automation Tools Are Not Created Equal

2018 is well underway, and automation is top of mind for business and IT professionals in every industry. In fact, according to the latest Gartner research, IT Infrastructure Automation Tools ranked number one as the top Initiative for Increased Investment in 2018. 71% of I&O leaders surveyed reported that they have plans to increase investment in these tools in the coming year, and Gartner listed the major benefit of these automation tools as reduced costs from standardizing infrastructure, automation workflows, and scripts. IT Automation tools are critical in achieving business agility —and it’s time we address the misconceptions that accompany it.

While the research on automation is prevalent and the benefits are proven, there are still many misconceptions surrounding the topic, the biggest of these being that all automation can provide the same value. This misconception stems from the idea that all automation is alike and results in the same benefits, an idea that can quickly turn your IT environment from average, to a tangled, complex, slow, mess.

Is Your IT Automation Allowing You to Achieve Pervasive Integration?

By Caroline Boyland on Fri, Sep 15, 2017 @ 09:09 AM

A recent Gartner research study, titled How to Achieve Digital Business Excellence by Mastering Pervasive Integration, highlights the need for interconnections between business processes, on-premise & cloud/hybrid environments, IoT components, IT systems, and more. If organizations want to stay on top of dynamic business demands and remain aggressive in their industry, it is imperative that they implement a pervasive integration strategy into their business. An IT automation solution can be just what an organization needs to master this. In a new Case Study, we investigated D&H Distributing, a leading technology distributor of IT and electronics, on their use of automation to integrate disparate applications. With the right solution, D&H overcame integration obstacles by connecting different applications and systems throughout their business.

Grow Your IoT Strategy: Gartner's 5 Steps to Defining Your Approach

By Caroline Boyland on Wed, Aug 09, 2017 @ 11:08 AM

The Internet of Things

Have you developed your IoT strategy? The IoT (Internet of Things) refers to the massive network of devices around the world, characterized by their "smart abilities." These are devices accessorized with data-consuming and data-producing sensors that allow them to communicate with one another and with users. Perhaps the most commonly known and one of the earliest examples of an IoT connected device, is the smart phone. However, the smart phone is no longer lonely in the IoT universe, as now just about every device, from washing machines, to medical instruments, to cars, can be made "smart". The amount of devices continues to grow, as IoT innovators are constantly creating new and exciting ways for data to be transferred. In fact, Gartner predicts that by 2020, the amount of globally connected things will reach over 20 billion. The IoT doesn't come easy though, as many organizations are facing difficulties with their IoT implementation and management. However, with the growing popularity of the IoT, it is imperative that businesses find a way to jumpstart their IoT implementation and overcome the potential struggles that they may face along the way.

APIs: The MVP of the IoT

By Caroline Boyland on Tue, Jul 26, 2016 @ 11:07 AM

Last November, Gartner looked towards the future and predicted that in 2016, 6.4 billion connected things will be in use worldwide. Today is that future. Around us right now, billions of connected things are speaking to each other, passing data, and keeping our lives efficient and modern. From the things we wear (our smart watches, our fitness trackers), to the perks that make our lives easier (our navigation systems, our smart thermostats and lighting systems) to the places we shop (think pharmacy mobile photo printing, mobile coupons based upon buying preferences) the IoT is already heavily integrated into our lives. Think about all of these connections in our lives today—and now multiply those connections by four. Gartner reports that by 2020, the amount of connected things is expected to rise to 25 billion. What I&O leaders need to know is what is enabling all of these connections and how organizations and businesses are expected to keep up with the growth and manage these links.
