ASCI’s recent webinar, From Siloed to Scalable: Exploring the Case for Unified IT Automation, includes a popular quote from Jack Welch, General Electric’s legendary CEO.

“If the rate of change on the outside exceeds the rate of change on the inside, the end is near.”

Welch was suggesting that organizations need to change faster than the markets they participate in. That’s great advice. In order to stay competitive, an organization should have the technologies, policies, and roadmaps that everyone else will want six months from now.

Gartner’s “2019 Planning Guide Overview: Architecting Your Digital Ecosystem” calls for more automation as it lays out the primary trends IT must contend with.

Complexity is a growing problem for IT. Digital technologies are rapidly evolving, market demands are more dynamic than ever, and IT’s role within the organization continues to transform.

This has caused “increasingly complex technology ecosystems” that are more decentralized and distributed, making it difficult for IT to develop cohesive management and monitoring strategies.

According to Paul DeBeasi and Kirk Knoernschild, the analysts behind Gartner’s 2019 digital ecosystem guide, there are several major trends increasing pressure on IT, including:

  • Data and analytics
  • Machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Cloud computing
  • The Internet of Things
  • Digital transformation

In order for IT to stay ahead of business demands, IT needs to be the driving force behind the organization’s digital agenda, which means first laying the foundation for IT’s own digital transformation. On this point, the Gartner analysts are clear: That foundation must include automation.

Intelligent Automation Defined

Intelligent automation is an IT automation tool that utilizes machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI).

ML relies on algorithms to predict outcomes based on data. The algorithms identify trends, commonalities, and correlations between variables, using statistical analysis to predict outcomes and future events. Then, as the program continues to run, the algorithms further improve their predictions based on subsequent datasets.

Any program, application, or system that can autonomously make decisions and take actions based on ML, has AI.

Intelligent automation refers to any IT automation tool that can improve its own processes and outcomes, optimize IT resources, and improve efficiency by analyzing data and augmenting human decision-making.
